CELPIP Listening: all 6 parts explained

The CELPIP-General Listening test has 6 scored parts and 38 questions. You hear each recording only once, then answer multiple-choice questions.

How the Listening test works

The Listening test is the first part of CELPIP-General. You hear conversations, a news report, a discussion and people sharing their opinions, all in everyday Canadian situations. You hear each recording only once, and then you answer multiple-choice questions on the screen.

There are six parts and 38 scored questions. Below you can see what each part involves, with a free lesson and worked examples for every part.

Quick tips

  • You can't replay the audio, so listening practice with a timer is the best preparation.
  • Take short notes on paper: names, numbers, decisions and opinions.
  • Read the answer choices carefully — they often repeat words from the recording to trick you.
